Frankie & Panda from Cape Town

With Frankie's permission we are sharing the conversation between us about her dog Panda who suffered from allergies, then obesity.

Hi there

Absolutely, you are more than welcome to add to your website 😊

I unfortunately don’t have a ‘before’ picture, but I’ll include a current photo.

Feel free to add that she was 13.8kg when I put her back onto RL, which was in August last year, and she is now 9.5! 😊 Her goal weight was 10kg so I’m very pleased.

I also used to have to take her to the vet every few months as she would have horrible allergy flare ups from whatever food she was eating. She would scratch her skin raw.

I haven’t had to take her to the vet once in almost a year!

Hey Raw Love!

I just wanted to pop in to let you know that since we last spoke, I put Panda onto your Ostrich and Venison (we alternate) STRICTLY.

No other food and only the occasional treat which will be cucumber or carrots, or some kind of dog friendly veggie.

And she’s lost around 4 kilos!

She also hasn’t needed to go to the vet for her allergies at all!

It’s honestly made such a massive positive difference to her health, and I am extremely grateful.

All the best

Hello again Frankie,

I remember we chatted earlier this year. Sorry to hear that this has flared up again. I did mention then that it would be best to stick to novel proteins and I would therefore highly recommend that you feed her ostrich and venison only for the time being. Don't forget to add Omega 3 (fish) to the diet at least twice a week. In case you don't remember, I suggested that you make a meal of tinned / raw sardines and 1 or 2 raw eggs (if free range/organic, add the crushed shell too for calcium), adding a bit of kefir if you have. This can be considered a meal and, as I said, a pretty hypo-allergenic one at that.

From what I remember weight was not an issue when she was on our meals before, right? Just feed her the quantity you used to feed her. Once she's off the kibble and onto raw only, she will lose weight. See how things go after two weeks or so and if you don't see enough of a change, adjust the portion size a bit.

Let us know how she goes.

Warm Regards,

Subject: Weight Loss

Hi there

I was giving my doggy, Panda, your food for about a year and she was absolutely OBSESSED with it - zooms to the kitchen every morning and evening!

Unfortunately, her atopic allergy got really bad as at the time we weren’t aware that she as allergic to chicken and beef.

My vet insisted I put her onto a Hills Prescription diet, which totally cleared up her allergies, but she has gained a LOT of weight, and also really does not like the food.

I suspect the weight gain is also a result of the medication she was given for her allergies.

I have tried decreasing the amount of food she gets but it just does not budge.

I have been considering switching her back to raw as I can see she really battles with the kibble, we have to soak it in warm water to try and make it a bit more pleasant for her which just breaks my heart. But now with this weight issue I think I simply must (she is going to be thrilled).

Could you please tell me exactly how much I should be feeding her, in order to help her lose weight?

She is 8 years old and currently weighs 13.8 and I would like to get her back down to 10 - yikes!

She gets an hour of exercise every day.

I have read that novel proteins are recommended for dogs with allergies so I think I will give her your ostrich or your venison - what do you think?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

All the best
