What does the “BARF” diet or ‘biologically appropriate’ diet mean?
BARF stands for biologically appropriate raw feeding/food. “Biologically appropriate” means that the physical body of the animal is designed by nature to eat and process this kind of food. For cats and dogs, this means:
- a diet rich in fresh meat, free from processed, dehydrated grains, preservatives and added chemical flavours.
- that nutrients are bio available (i.e. in its natural form) therefore more easily absorbed by the body.
- that waste thereafter is efficiently and properly eliminated.
This is optimum nutrition that results in a robust, healthy immune system.
