Elements of a healthy diet |
 |
A variety of animal proteins, small amounts of carbohydrates and fat as well as a certain amount of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and trace elements promote peak health in dogs and cats.
Eating enough protein is essential to maintain a healthy body. It repairs body tissue, helps to fight off illness and disease and keeps the immune system functioning properly. Protein is converted by the body into amino acids which are necessary for building muscle and keeping blood healthy.
Carbohydrates provide energy and benefits muscle tissue. Carbohydrates active digestive enzymes that allow food to be broken down and processed by the body in a more efficient way. They convert into glucose and in humans, are considered the body’s preferred source of energy. |
Dogs and cats however are classified as carnivores - their physical bodies are structured to metabolize protein and fats as sources of energy. In the wild, they would eat few, if any, carbohydrates.
Vitamins are essential to boost the immune system and keep the body healthy. They are required for healthy skin, bones, teeth and vision. Minerals are good for the blood, bones and teeth. They are essential for healthy biological functions, maintaining correct blood pressure, for the nervous system and transporting oxygen through the body.
Fats provide energy and lower the risk of developing certain diseases and heart problems. Essential fatty acids (think Omega 3 and 6) are required by the body for good health, specifically for the metabolic processes. They are crucial to fight inflammations, affects moods and other cellular functions. They must be included in the diet because the body cannot produce them.
Why RAW food? |
 |
By eating convenience food and take-away meals we know we harm our immune system. Why would this be any different for pets?
It is estimated that about 70-80% of nutrients are destroyed when food is cooked. Heat or excessive cooking and food processing destroy essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids and change the structure of proteins and fats, thereby making them harmful to the body.
|
Raw food on the other hand contains thousands of health-giving, living nutrients that assist the body to operate optimally and remain healthy. Raw food is alive and regenerates the cells of the body by adding living vitamins, enzymes and minerals. It also provides additional antioxidants which slow down degenerative processes, disease and ageing.
Most of all, raw food conforms to the biological design of the digestive system of cats and dogs. Raw food is what Nature intended for them to eat!
